"It's all in how you raise them."

This is one of the most misused and misleading blame-shifting responsibility-shirking sentences in the dog world.

Was your dog bred for protection? To be territorial? Perhaps to be independent. To hunt. To have high prey drive. To run, to herd, to fight. Perhaps to work? All the kisses and cuddles, snuggles and fur-baby titles in the world aren’t going to change your dog’s nature. You need to understand the nature of the breed you choose.

It’s not all how you raise them – your dog’s genetics matter.
It’s not all how you raise them – what your dog was bred for matters.
It’s not all how you raise them – your dog’s individual temperament matters.
It’s not all how you raise them – your dog’s pedigree and inherited drive matters.
It’s not all how you raise them – your dog’s early life socialization and exposure matters.

Now, how does that affect how you raise them?

Now, how does that affect how you respect their nature, and train them?

Dogs don’t fit in a one-size-fits-all training box.

Know your dog. Understand your dog. Train accordingly.

Get Inspired. M-K9

I hear it all the time:  "Your dog is so calm."  "I wish my dog was that mellow."
She's not - she's hell on wheels! She's just well trained.
Credit where credit's due - that's all on me. That's what I do.

I have to say I really like your approach and thought process on it as well. Thank you for explaining so thoroughly.  We will be keeping your words in mind as we train!
